100 Followers in 3 Days? Yep.

I doubted it was possible to exponentially increase my connections on Medium after having no more than three followers for over a year. But it is possible. Yesterday I achieved it. And here’s how.

Someone told me back in 2017 I should write on Medium. I shrugged it off and wrote on LinkedIn instead. Grew my platform. Got lots of engagement. But Medium called me like a siren. The only problem? NO engagement with any posts; even some of my post popular LinkedIn articles I pulled over here got a giant goose egg.

“How do I earn followers?” I wondered time and again. The answer:

Your results are a direct reflection of your effort.

5 Quick Tips for 100 Quick Follows

  1. Define your purpose and intent. Are you trying to earn money through the Medium Partner Program (MPP)? If so, you need 100+ followers to apply. Make sure you’ve already published a story and can write an article at least once every 6 months.
  2. Complete your profile. What do you write about? Why? People want to know, and some won’t follow if you aren’t clear. See tips on this below.
  3. Find your voice. Write from your heart. When you’re passionate, it will attract others. Keep your stories short to entice readers and use catchy headlines with visuals. My 10–11 minute long stories aren’t succeeding. My 3–5 minute stories are.
  4. Engage with others. Follow other writers and support their stories by reading, then clapping and/or commenting. Many will follow you back. Look for ‘100 Followers’ stories and follow the authors and people who comment on them. We are actively building our audiences.
  5. Follow people back. Go to your Profile > click on ‘Followers’ > view the list of people who follow you and follow them back if you wish. I’ve taken a similar approach on Twitter this year and gone from under 50 to over 2,300 followers in 10 months.

Let’s support our fellow writers! We are a team of intellects trying to share our voices and, in many cases, create change. Don’t underestimate your worth. If you need a motivational boost, check out 10 Reasons Writers Are Leaders.

Your Profile

Here are some helpful tips for creating your profile so you can build your brand.

Medium has several areas to manage your profile. Here’s a quick way to sort them out.
  1. Click your profile in the top right menu. Click your name.
  2. Click ‘About.’
  3. Edit the profile that displays on your profile page itself (NOTE: this is different than the profile that displays next to your ‘follow’ button). This can be a bit longer, but still be clear about what you do and why, and make sure it’s similar to your other one, which brings me to…
  4. Open the profile menu > Settings.
  5. Complete your BIO section. This is critically important! This is what displays in your overview next to your follow button. This may determine whether someone chooses to follow you or not.
  6. Add a profile photo.

Thank you to everyone who helped me reach this milestone. I am excited to connect with writers on Medium and hear what you have to say. Connect with me for articles on leadership, product development, personal growth, writing, and more.

The postings on this site are my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of my employer.
