Living a Highly Engaged Life
I recently listened to a discussion on the topic of highly engaged employees: what does it mean to be one? What kinds of impacts can they have? It reminded me of living a highly engaged life — one in which you are actively contributing. One in which you can produce outcomes orders of magnitude higher than those who are not living an engaged life. But life’s not a competition against others. It’s a competition against yourself. How far are you willing to go? How much are you willing to endure? What results do you seek — not from others, but from yourself?
Whether you already love your life and approach each day with vigor and optimism, or you feel there are areas you want to improve (or some combination of both), living a highly engaged life means taking control.
A highly engaged person is challenged. They don’t know it all, and that’s exactly how they like it. They want to grow. They want to learn. They want to improve. They do so willingly, and without trepidation.
They approach their endeavors with curiosity, prioritize them according to impact, then execute them with discipline.
Highly engaged people do not waste time or effort… on anything or anyone, anywhere, anytime. Each atomic moment holds vast potential, if not for productivity, for contemplation, which is, in and of itself, productive. Forget hours or minutes; highly engaged people know every second can be optimized. They aren’t wasting this sacred chance to live a fulfilling life — a treasure we all share, but a realization to which only some of us have awakened. A highly engaged person does not wait for life to happen. They make it happen.
You could have been born a tiny insect, or a bacterium invisible to the naked eye, or a sea creature living in some dark crevice, but instead, you were born a member of the smartest species on the planet — for now. Use your gifts. Shape the world. Inspire this place, and the people in it, to be better… starting with you.
Living a highly engaged life starts with knowing yourself.
Only then will your adventures and paths appear. But even so, you will only find them if you’re looking.
